PHILOSOPHY

At Beachwood Nursery School, our educational philosophy is the belief that learning should be an active process for young children; learning through play and actual experiences.  Emphasis is placed on helping children acquire skills that enable them to deal with situations, make choices and experience success within a carefully arranged structure.  Learning opportunities are individualized and age appropriate so each child can develop at his or her own pace.

Our goal is to provide a safe, caring environment away from home where children can learn and grow in confidence and in ability in all aspects of development; physically, socially, emotionally, intellectually and creatively.  We see ourselves in partnership with parents and through our mutual sharing, we can ensure the best possible growth, development and learning for young children.  Beachwood Nursery School believes parent participation is an important factor in school success.  We welcome parent participation through classroom volunteers and mystery readers to name a few.

The Infant Program is designed to stimulate & nurture within a carefully prepared environment that focuses on trust, happiness, safety & sanitation. Our staff are educators who possess knowledge of the specific developmental characteristics of young children that build upon one another. This then becomes the basis for experiences in the broad categories of sensory-motor, cognitive, language and social-personal activities for the infants.

The Toddler Program offers opportunities to refine previous skills while acknowledging the toddler's newly acquired motor skills & the need to actively explore & discover the environment. Staff support the individuality of each child while providing safe boundaries. Staff encourage & support emerging independence.

The PreSchool/Pre-Kindegarten Programs are literacy based & designed to develop the whole child giving them the skills they need. Activities are balanced between academic & social, active & quiet, indoor & outdoor, small group, large group & individual. This child-centered approach encourages more independent learning & peer socialization.

The Junior Kindergarten Program is specifically for children turning 5 years old by December 31st and for children whose parents choose to give them the "gift of time" by completing another year of pre-kindergarten. Based on a 5 half day program, children have the opportunity to explore & strengthen skills in reading, writing & math. Curriculum is tailored to children's interests with different study groups, new projects, books & materials providing new learning opportunities. Curriculum will incorporate adult-guided & child-initiated experiences, play, physical activity & social interaction. Teachers will be able to respond to the unique interests, learning styles & developmental characteristics of each child as they transition into their kindergarten year. Our program & our teachers are guided by early learning standards that emphasize the concepts & skills appropriate to & important for the transitional kindergarten year.

The Full Day Kindergarten Program allows children & teachers time to explore topics in depth; reduces the ratio of transition time to class time; provides for greater continuity of day to day activities; and provides an environment that favors a child-centered, developmentally appropriate approach. Our program emphasises language development through appropriate pre-literacy experiences such as journal writing & guided reading. Children are offered a balance of small group, large group & individual activities throughout a 6-hour day. Our program follows NJ Core Curriculum Standards

Beachwood Nursery School is licensed by the State of NJ and received Accreditation in 1992 by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs, a division of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).  Programs accredited by the National Academy voluntarily undergo a comprehensive process of internal self study every five years.  Validators are invited to verify compliance with the Academy’s Criteria for High Quality Early Childhood Programs before receiving Accreditation.  Please see www.naeyc.org for further information.
